Why Study French?

Learning French can make you a better student

It’s a fact. Your future success in life depends to a great extent on your success now as a students and learning French can help.   Studies demonstrate that you’ll boost your own proficiency in English… improve your memory and self-discipline… enhance verbal and problem-solving skills… and develop intercultural sensitivity.

Studies also show that learning a foreign language actually contributes to better SAT and ACT scores – which could help you get into the college of your choice.  And most colleges and universities have a language requirement for incoming students.

Learning French also broadens your knowledge in other areas of study as well.  History brims with the names of French citizens who have made important contributions in science, literature, exploration, music, fashion, art, and medicine.  The United States, particular, owes a debt of gratitude to France.  Explorers like Marquette, Joliet, and La Salle opened the Mississippi Basin to trade and future settlement.  Two hundred years ago, another Frenchman, the Marquis de Lafayette, lent support to the American colonists in their move toward independence.

When you know French, you can communicate with more than 125 million French-speaking people worldwide.  And overseas travel is that much more enjoyable because French helps you feel at home wherever you go.

Exploring the traditions of another country gives you French words – like déja vu, raison d’être, and hors d’oeuvre – add spice to our own language.

You’ll also learn about French holiday customs that can enrich your own celebration.  Maybe you’ll try your hand at French cuisine… visit museums to admire the work of the French Impressionists… enjoy watching French films without the benefit of subtitles… and feel very much a citizen of the global community.
